FWC’s Guide to Harmony: Living Safely with Alligators in Florida

For many centuries, alligators have been a natural part of Florida’s environment, inhabiting its marshes, swamps, rivers, and lakes, and are present in all 67 counties. With Florida’s human population growth in recent years, the interaction between alligators and humans has become more frequent, especially as more people seek waterfront homes and engage in various water-related activities. This increased presence near water bodies, particularly during the cooler weather when residents tend to spend more time outdoors, heightens the likelihood of encounters with these reptiles, thereby raising the potential for conflict.

While most Floridians have adapted to living alongside alligators, the risk of conflict, though minimal, remains. Incidents of serious injuries due to alligators are uncommon in Florida. However, for those concerned about an alligator’s presence, the Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC) offers assistance through its toll-free Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-392-4286. Upon receiving a call, the FWC dispatches a contracted nuisance alligator trapper to address the issue.

It’s important to remember never to feed alligators and to maintain a safe distance when encountering one. For safety, it’s advised to swim only in designated areas during daylight hours. Additionally, pet owners should keep their pets leashed and away from water edges, as a precautionary measure against potential alligator encounters. By following these guidelines, Floridians and visitors can safely enjoy the state’s natural beauty while coexisting with its native alligator population.
