Coreen Goerner Named Teacher of the Year

Ms. Coreen Goerner, Mathematics Coach at Tohopekaliga High, has been named Osceola School District’s Teacher of the Year. A dedicated and inspirational educator, she has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to student success, a passion for mathematical excellence, and an extraordinary ability to empower both students and colleagues.

Since embarking on her teaching position at Tohopekaliga High in 2021, Ms. Goerner has spearheaded initiatives that have increased overall math achievement by 26% over three years. Her innovative approach to instruction and her dedication to fostering a love for mathematics have not only elevated student engagement but also positioned the school as a hub of academic excellence. She continues to play a pivotal role in mentoring new teachers, designing professional development workshops for educators, and leading instructional coaching sessions. Her expertise in analyzing student performance data allows instruction to be tailored to the specific needs of individual students.

Beyond the classroom, Ms. Goerner has developed and managed an after-school tutoring program, which reaches hundreds of students weekly and ensures that all learners, regardless of ability, have the resources and support to excel.  Her leadership in organizing mathematic boot camps and competition teams has cultivated an environment where students strive for and achieve academic success. She also serves in numerous leadership capacities at both the district and state levels, including as Founder and President of the Osceola Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Conference General Chairperson for the Florida Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Member of the Florida Association of Mathematics Supervisors, and District Representative for the Standards Institute Conference.

“Ms. Goerner’s influence and impact extends far beyond the classroom, leaving a legacy on students, educators, our school district, and the future of education,” said Osceola School District Superintendent Dr. Mark Shanoff. Ms. Goerner will now represent Osceola County at the state level in the Florida Department of Education’s 2026 Teacher of the Year judging.

Joe Castillo Named School-Related Employee of the Year
Joe Castillo, ESOL Paraprofessional at Lakeview Elementary School, has been selected as the 2025 School-Related Employee of the Year for the Osceola School District. For the past three years,  he has worked tirelessly assisting students and providing essential support to English Language Learners. His enthusiasm, his passion for meeting the educational needs of students, and, most importantly, his sincere interest in and concern for the children are infectious and make him a true asset to the Osceola School District.
Recognized by his principal and co-workers for his strong work ethic, character, and compassion for all, Mr. Castillo has built a strong collaborative relationship with teachers with the goal of strengthening students’ skills with language and academics. He uses a variety of strategies to support the students he teaches in small groups, which include scaffolds, visuals, and hands-on learning. His focus on the students allows them to take risks during the learning process and to develop the confidence for success. His tremendous impact can also be seen as he regularly substitutes in classrooms, supports with the testing of students, volunteers with after-school events, and leads meetings for ESOL families. In leading All-Pro Dad meetings for the past three years, he continues to engage families in meaningful conversations which have fostered a supportive and inclusive environment at the school.
