St. Cloud City Council on Thursday approved with a 5-0 vote a pair of ordinances that will give the City flexibility to address downtown parking issues.

In approving the ordinances, Council responded to community input by removing the parcel that is used as a community garden behind City Hall. Several residents spoke about the importance of the community garden at that location.

“I would love to preserve the community garden,” Council Member Kolby Urban said. “Regardless of how our downtown evolves, we need to continue to provide green space.”

Changing the future land use designation and zoning of the City-owned properties around City Hall allows the City to explore building a parking garage downtown. Construction of a downtown parking garage is part of the Community Redevelopment Agency Master Plan and the City’s Comprehensive Plan.
