Positively Osceola
Coming off an 8-3 season, a district championship and a trip to the FHSAA Regional Playoffs, the St. Cloud Bulldogs enter 2026 looking to build on that momentum — with standout junior quarterback Jeremiah Lattier back under center to lead the way. Lattier, who transferred from Lake Minneola after his freshman year, won the starting job and helped lead St. Cloud to its first district championship since 2016.
Last year, the 6-3, 220-lb. quarterback completed almost 60% of his passes – throwing for 2800 yards and 25 touchdowns; while accounting for five more on the ground. “Whenever you can return a starter at quarterback, it’s a huge plus,” head coach Mike Short said. “Jeremiah stepped in as a sophomore and had a big year and has had a great offseason. We expect another big year as he builds his resume for colleges.”
Although he lost several weapons to graduation, including two-way star Bryce Williams (804 receiving yards, 9 TDs), Lattier will have several playmakers returning. They include wide receiver Stacy Taylor (50 receptions, 656 yards, 9 TDs) and running back Mike Cuyler (273 yards rushing, 2 TDs). The equivalent of a sixth man in basketball, Cuyler has patiently waited his turn to shine in the Bulldogs offense.
“Those two guys have the potential for outstanding years,” Short said. “Stacy started in the defensive backfield for two years before we moved him to offense last season. He could become what Bryce was for us last year. Cuyler has worked his tail off this year and has already started to turn the heads of college recruiters.”
In addition, Owen Sullivan returns as one of the area’s top tight ends. A solid blocker and big target at 6-4, 235-lbs., Sullivan has shown the ability to get down field and make big plays. He caught 34 passes for 639 yards and five scores last season; while averaging more than 17 yards per reception in his career. “He had a great season and is bigger, faster and stronger than he was a year ago,” Short said. “More importantly, he’s a player who always puts the team first. I told him we might have to play him some on the interior offensive line this year and all he said was ‘wherever you need me coach’.
The offensive line has some questions as the graduation claimed four of five starters. Senior three-year letterwinner Kash Hadley, 6-0, 250, returns to anchor the offensive line that will include several other returning veterans with playing experience including Derick Molina. Look for Harmony transfer Nolan Yontz to grab one of the available starting spots.
Defensively, the secondary led the Bulldogs last year and despite the graduation loss of Williams and Jeremiah Barnes, St. Cloud should be exceptional again on the back end. Junior Jayden Irons (4 interceptions and 13 pass defenses) returns; as does Zeus Howard and Jowell Cruz. Aiden Richardson transfers in from Tohopekaliga and Short noted that rising sophomore Chris Bright is an outstanding prospect.
Hank Williams (48 tackles, 10 TFL) and Jude Crockcroft (37 tackles, 7 TFL, 4 QS) return to lead the defensive line. Chase Gilbert (68 tackles, 5 TFL) is the top returning linebacker; while the Bulldogs got a huge “get” at linebacker when former Harmony star Colton Sklarek transferred to St. Cloud in time for spring football.
The kicking game may be one of the biggest question marks heading into the 2026 season. Esteban Melendez, who handled extra points last year (22 of 24 PAT) may see expanded duties in kickoffs and extra points but a punter must be found.
After reclassification was completed, the Bulldogs find themselves in essentially the same district as last year, which includes arch-rival Harmony, Tohopekaliga and Lake Nona. Gateway, a long-time opponent, was reclassified and will join the district. The Bulldogs will play all four district opponents on the road. For the first time in recent memory, the Dogs will open the season against Osceola in the 102nd edition of “The Game,” one of the longest running continuous rivalries in the nation.
St. Cloud will leave the state of Florida for the first time in school history when it travels to Marietta, GA on Aug. 28 to face the In all, the schedule include four games against teams that qualified for the state playoffs last season, which does not include an Oct. 9 game with Windermere, who went 10-0 last season as an independent and was not eligible for the state playoffs. “Our schedule is extremely challenging with four playoff teams, which doesn’t include Windermere who has won 20 straight games,” Short noted.
Entering his fifth season as head coach, Short said the goal is to continue the current trajectory his program is on. “For years, we were sort of in the same rut. We would have an okay season followed by seven or eight wins but then follow that in a total rebuild with back-to-back losing seasons,” Short said. “We want to get to the point where we have a shot of the playoffs every year.”
Under Short, the Bulldogs appear headed in the direction of long-time success — averaging seven wins in his four years as coach.
