Community leaders, supporters, and veteran advocates gathered Friday morning at the Triple N Shooting Range for a morning of gratitude, healing, and support during the McCormick Research Institute’s 2nd Annual Clays Classic for Veterans — an inspiring event dedicated to honoring  and supporting those who have served and supporting the Institute’s transformative equine therapy programs.

The event was led by McCormick CEO and County Commissioner Ricky Booth and joined by Florida Lt. Governor Jay Collins, State Representative Erika Booth, and State Representative Paula Stark, all demonstrating strong support for the veterans and families who rely on McCormick’s services. Lt. Governor Collins addressed participants directly, thanking them for their commitment to uplifting and supporting those who have served.

The morning opened with a reverent tribute as McCormick’s veteran-based horse team officially kicked off the event. Immediately following, Hailey Wall delivered a heartfelt performance of the National Anthem, setting an emotional and patriotic tone for the day.

Participants then took to the range for a morning filled with friendly competition, teamwork, and camaraderie. Supporters, businesses, organizations, and volunteers came together with a shared purpose — giving back to the men and women who have sacrificed so much for our nation’s freedom.

From Humble Beginnings to a National Leader in Equine-Assisted Therapy

McCormick Research Institute traces its beginnings to 2002, when the organization launched as Heavenly Hooves, founded by horse enthusiast Thomasa Sanchez at the home of the Tompkins family in Osceola County. From the start, the mission centered on healing through the therapeutic power of horses.

From 2002 to 2005, Heavenly Hooves transported horses to Give Kids the World Village, offering equine-assisted experiences to children with life-threatening illnesses. Today, miniature horses continue that outreach at Nemours Children’s Hospital and Bishop Grady Villas, a residential community for adults with special needs.

In 2006, the organization moved to Osceola Heritage Park, expanding its services to provide ongoing emotional, mental, and physical therapies for individuals with disabilities — a program that continues today as Heavenly Hooves.

A major milestone came in 2011, when the organization partnered with the University of Central Florida College of Medicine to launch the Horses & Heroes Program, serving veterans coping with PTSD and other service-related challenges. Educational programs and research initiatives were added soon after.

In 2013, recognizing the program’s impact, Osceola County voted to construct a dedicated facility. The building was completed in late 2016, giving the organization a permanent home and the ability to expand services and conduct innovative research.

The organization was renamed McCormick Research Institute in 2014, honoring Ruth “Bazy” McCormick Tankersley, mother of Mark Miller, former owner of Arabian Nights and current chairman of the Institute. Bazy was an influential philanthropist, publisher, community leader, and equestrian figure who devoted her life to “doing good works for others.”

From modest beginnings, the organization has grown to serve more than 20,000 riders, supported by 12 therapy horses, over 100 active volunteers, and a dedicated staff that includes a CEO, program managers, facilities managers, and PATH-certified equine specialists.

McCormick is now recognized as a national leader in equine-assisted therapy, research, and education.
