Road trips remain the most popular choice as travelers celebrate America’s 250th birthday

As Americans prepare to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday, the upcoming Fourth of July holiday is expected to bring the busiest Independence Day travel period on record, with millions of people taking to the roads, skies, railways, and cruise ports across the country.

According to AAA, an estimated 72.2 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home during the nine-day Independence Day travel period, which runs from Saturday, June 27, through Sunday, July 5. The forecast represents a slight increase over last year’s 71.8 million travelers and marks the highest July Fourth travel volume ever recorded under AAA’s current methodology.

While travel growth has slowed compared to recent years, demand remains strong despite ongoing inflation and higher travel costs.

“Traveling during the week of July Fourth remains a tradition for many Americans,” AAA noted, with many families choosing shorter vacations, destinations closer to home, or cruises and all-inclusive resorts to help manage costs.

Most Travelers Will Hit the Road

Driving continues to dominate holiday travel plans, with 61.4 million people expected to travel by car, accounting for approximately 85 percent of all Independence Day travelers.

Although gasoline prices have experienced some recent fluctuations, AAA says motorists continue to prioritize road trips for the flexibility and affordability they provide. Travelers are encouraged to check tire pressure, battery condition, fluid levels, and schedule any needed vehicle maintenance before departing to reduce the risk of roadside breakdowns.

Last year alone, AAA responded to more than 687,000 roadside assistance calls during the Independence Day holiday period.

Air Travel Holds Steady

AAA projects 5.85 million travelers will fly domestically during the holiday week, a slight increase from last year.

Round-trip domestic airfare has risen modestly, averaging around $830 for travelers booking popular holiday destinations. Despite the higher prices, airports nationwide are expected to remain busy throughout the extended holiday period.

Cruises and Other Travel Continue Growing

Travel by bus, train, and cruise ship is expected to see the strongest year-over-year growth.

AAA forecasts nearly 4.93 million Americans will choose these transportation options during the holiday, driven largely by continued demand for cruise vacations, where travelers can lock in many expenses upfront.

Orlando Among Top Holiday Destinations

Florida remains one of the country’s most popular Independence Day destinations.

AAA ranks Orlando as the nation’s second-most popular domestic destination, behind only Seattle. Miami and Fort Lauderdale also appear among the top 10 U.S. destinations, reflecting Florida’s continued appeal for theme parks, beaches, and cruise departures.

Internationally, Vancouver, Rome, Dublin, Paris, and London top travelers’ wish lists.

Best Times to Travel

Transportation analytics firm INRIX expects the heaviest traffic during afternoon and early evening hours throughout the holiday week.

AAA recommends travelers leave early in the morning, especially on busy travel days, or consider departing earlier in the week to avoid the worst congestion.

Drivers should also plan extra travel time, monitor weather conditions, avoid distracted driving, and arrange for a sober ride if celebrating with alcohol.
