We live in an amazing, and rapidly growing community. To keep our community beautiful, we need to do our best to properly recycle and to responsibly manage our waste.

To that end, the City of Kissimmee has asked Positively Osceola to join them in a month-long campaign called “Trash the Bag.” The campaign kicked off Thursday, August 1st with a purpose of educating and encouraging the community to properly recycle in order to reduce plastic bag dependency and usage.

Many people aren’t aware that if Kissimmee’s recycling collection trucks have more than 40% of NON-recyclables onboard, including excessive plastic bags, the entire load is then sent to the landfill. Additionally, plastic bags frequently get tangled in sorting equipment at the recycling center, making it difficult and costly to properly recycle.

The “Trash the Bag” campaign is taking place in order to increase awareness of the City of Kissimmee’s residents that all recyclable items must be loose in their recycling bin. Since almost all plastic bags are not recyclable, nor environmentally friendly, the City of Kissimmee is also encouraging the use of reusable bags.

Retail stores like Walmart Supercenter offer drop-off collection bins to recycle plastic bags. If you have plastic bags in your house or office, remember there’s another option that will help the environment and will also ensure that recycling collection trucks won’t be contaminated and end up at the landfill. “Trash the bag,” or take it to one of the participating stores that accepts them for recycling and make a Positive Difference in the community!

It doesn’t take that long, but it does take being intentional about how we manage our trash and how we can protect the precious environment with live in. Over the next four weeks the City of Kissimmee and Positively Osceola will be bringing information that will educate, motivate and help the community participate in proper recycling!
